Iran has submitted the acclaimed film “Nader and Simin: A Separation” to the 84th Academy Awards to compete in the best foreign-language films category in 2012.
Directed and written by Asghar Farhadi, “A Separation” won a Golden Bear for the best film at the Berlin Film Festival and its cast ensembles, male and female, received two Silver Bears for best actor and best actress earlier this year. The film narrates the break-up of a marriage over a tough decision to whether or not leave Iran for a better life abroad.
Leila Hatami, Peyman Moaadi, Shahab Hosseini, Merila Zarei, Sareh Bayat, and Asghar Farhadi’s doughter Sarina Farhadi star in “A Separation.”
A board of nine filmmakers assigned by the Farabi Foundation, an affiliate to the Ministry of Culture, picks the Iranian submission to the Academy Awards annually. The board also reviewed “Here without Me”, “A Cube of Sugar” and “Alzheimer’s” before selecting “A Separation” as the official submission, the sources reported.
Iran’s previous submissions include “The Cycle” by Dariush Mehrjui (1978), “Under the Olive Trees” by Abbas Kirostami (1995), “White Balloon” by Jafar Pnahai (1996), “Gabbeh” by Mohsen Makhmalbaf (1998), and “About Elly” another film by Asghar Farhadi in 2010.
Among submitted Iranian films, Majid Majidi‘s “Children of Heaven” (1999) got a nomination for the Oscar of best foreign language film.
